Old Tyme Christmas in Harpers Ferry(a paddlers perspective)

Indoor endeavors and thoughts of warmer days. That’s what winter means to me the fair weather paddler. Fortunately, the Harpers Ferry area offers a year round calendar of events to draw us summer folk out of our winter cocoons. One of my favorites is Old Tyme Christmas, celebrated all through the Historic Town of Harpers Ferry WV. A town I only get to see from a distance during the busy summer season, seated on the back of a raft on the Shenandoah River. The town is all decked out in garland, bows, and twinkly lights, representing the yuletide of 1864 when soldiers of both the North and the South, depending on who was holding the town at the time, did their best to celebrate the holidays while far away from home. OK maybe they didn’t have the twinkly lights but you get the picture. On weekends December 4th through the 19th you can experience musical performances, puppet shows, storytelling, visits with Santa, caroling, arts and crafts shows, unique shops, and, my favorite, the streets lit up with luminaries leading up to St James Catholic Church where a living nativity is performed Saturday and Sunday evenings in one of the most architecturally beautiful buildings in town.
On your way to town stop in our Maryland kayak shop. There you can pick up a used kayak or canoe, a new kayak, or paddling gear for that paddler on your Holiday list. Or check out our Adventure Gift Certificates on line for Paddle & Wine tours in Leesburg, VA or Boat and Brew tours in Frederick MD and more!
