Local Food

Why buy local food? Well for one, local foods are grown nearby so that it is at the market almost as soon as it is harvested. This makes it more fresh than food, that had to travel days, if not weeks, to get to market.

There are many good reasons to buy local produce and meat, it is better for the environment, provides local jobs, and is fresh. But I believe, if you can, you should buy local produce and meat to support our local farmers, as well as improve your health and that of our environment.

A second reason to buy local foods is to minimize environmental degradation. Local foods travel just a few miles get to you. The industrial food system, on the other hand, sends its food thousands of miles across state lines, national borders, even oceans!

Where can you find locals foods? Obviously, at the farmers markets in the area. But there are also restaurants and others who provide locals foods in the Tri-State(West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland) area. Among the locals restaurants there is Cookie's Cooking company, Stone Soup Bistro, and the Blue Heron Grill(owned and operated by River & Trail Outfitters). Another food outlet is Back Creek Bend Farm in Hedgesville, WV. They sell grass fed beef, pastured chicken, and pork right off the farm.
